Final Post

So after many ridiculously long hours and edits I still couldn't change the quality of the second set of children. I have made the other changes and improved my video.

I like how the colours are bright now and represent the idea of children now. I have made my clip exactly three minutes to suit the idea of children having a short attention span and getting my message across quickly.

TO VIEW VIDEO:
A CHILD'S FUTURE

After Presentation

I got some feedback about my video clip from presentations

These are to:

- Make the transitions more subtle, as they are quite harsh maybe making it fade.
- Try and make the quality the same over both sets of kids
- Fix up some editing and cuts
- Increase volumes of speech in some aspects

Iterations and Interviews

ITERATIONS
-----------------
I changed my idea slightly to look more at the innocence of kids and their futures rather than comparing it to the media's point of view. This way I can just focus on the kids and make the video fun and short, getting a very light-hearted reaction from the audience. I will try keep to three minutes to reinforce my idea. The length is short because children have a short attention span and I want to keep the cuts short to add to get only the point across.

INTERVIEWS
-----------------
I conducted my interviews on Thursday and Saturday this week and decided to use two pairs of kids from two different families. They were shot in different ways, the older children were in separate shots whereas the younger two were shot together so the interaction is different.

Concept

I developed this idea about how people see children and how some people see them as being influenced by the way the media treats things, so this idea of kids no longer being innocent.

My concept has been added below.

------------------------------------------

What’s the future?

Kids are our future.

I wanted to look at how children see themselves and how they think their futures are going to play out. I wanted to investigate what they like about the world and what they wanted to grow to be.

I think the children today have major potential and I want to put a positive outlook on how everyone sees them. I have observed some people assume children want to be famous or have money due to media’s portrayal; I believe children still have dreams and want to become something more than famous – or have more than money in life.

I look at the media’s portrayal as being the influences and suggestions they have in children’s magazines and television.

I will look at and interview a few children and maybe even some parents to get an idea of how they are being brought up – hopefully encouraged to try everything – while focusing on how the children see themselves and environment.

The reaction I want from the audience is the opposite ideals that the media portrays. I want them to be able to see there is still innocence in the youth today and that they haven’t been corrupted by the publicity of the “perfect image.”

Who knows what the future has in store for us?

These innocent young kids are our future.

Inspiration Images

Going to investigate the innocence of children asking about the future and where they want to go, who they look up to etc looking through the eye of the children.

PROJECT THREE - Initial Ideas

So first I had no idea where to go with this project - did I want to interview people about something and get opinions or did I want people to learn something from someone or something I know.

I decided to investigate KIDS, not sure about the angle as of yet but I know I want kids on the screen and them being natural.

Final Review

First of all, my video turned out almost exactly how I wanted.

I wanted to create a boring video showing only the annoying attributes of a roundabout.

In doing this though, I removed some of the elements of the experience of a roundabout which could have enriched my video.

I like the sequence of clips and the fact that are simply put together. I have only some effects to create some kind of atmosphere. For example, I sharpened the clip at the start of the four way split to try and convey the idea of scratchy and annoying roundabout - also with the arrows.

Most of my shots include some kind of road markings which is what I was most interested in on the roundabout. The way we are told what to do by the white paint on the road.

The indicator overlay wasn't the best as I didn't keep it continuous, but throughout the clip I did increase the amount of clicking just to add to the atmosphere of impatience.

Filming

Went out and filmed looking just the cars interaction - figured I should clarify my idea a little bit more and do some more shooting as I could not get my video sequence the way I wanted.

First attempt went straight into bin.

Then had problems with recapturing my movie as it overwrote all of my clips and I had to recapture them.

Not cool.

Concept

The Paramata Roundabout.

This idea is about how there is three actions at a roundabout. Turn. Indicate. Giveway. These three actions lead to a successful movement through the roundabout to get to your destination.

I will approach this by creating different shots from different angles but in the end the outcome will be boring. I want my clips audio to be repetitive and only include an indicator. This allows the effects and the images to be the more interesting part.

I will include gaps in the audio to add to the repetitive effect - you think it's over and then it starts again.

I will include a four screen split to create the idea of a roundabout. This will occur in the moddle of the clip. Just to balance it out.

I will aim to make my clip 3minutes long. Or as close as possible.

Change of Idea

I have decided to change my idea to the Paramata Roundabout.

First of all, I thought I limited myself with choosing a playground as there is not much movement and it is quite plain and unoriginal.

Secondly, I like the hectic atmosphere of the roundabout as it always gets blocked up and traffic becomes a nightmare.

I will approach this by filming from different points of view, hopefully right above it so I can mask the film to show a different perspective.

If I can't get a good shot from above, I will make it more about the experience which is had in the roundabout rather than the onlookers point of view.

Language of New Media

In the article "Language of New Media" by Lev Manovich, he addresses the idea of new media. Like what is it? How do we define new media? Manovich then begins to answer his own questions and decides that the people who define new media have limited themselves and not included everything which is needed.

I think this article was alright. It addressed the ideas successfully and then went into detail. Manovich raised a question, which made you think, then provided an answer. I think new media can be anything, it is an infinite idea. No constraints as some people believe.

PROJECT TWO - Intial Ideas

For this project, we have to show an aspect of a site that is unique or maybe a different way of looking at it. I brainstormed an idea and decided to use a playground.
I wanted to look at in first person perspective and show a different point of view.
Like a show a creepy, alone kinda atmosphere in a place which is normally seen as fun and happy, for children. I will be exploring this idea more, over the weekend and have a concept statement written up, before tuesday.

Project Review

Okay, so after hand in we got told about how we had to credit the place where we got our clips and provide credits at the end of the clip on the internet. I think it would be useful next time to have a sheet like we get for DMDN201 - about project criteria etc - just because hand in was kind of unclear. So hopefully, I did everything that was required. :)

All three of my movies I have created are "Public Domain" videos.

Final Decisions

So first of all, I chose clip number one as the one to go on my website because it was my favourite clip. Once I had made it, I just could not do anything as good as it. Not that I don't like my other two clips but I prefer my first one. It makes me laugh about the repetition of the brand name and I just think it's got a clearer remix message than the other two. - more to the point.

RemixTHREE

For my third remix, I decided to put both of the advertisements together. I added a "click" as a kind of transition between the two clips and then shortened the advertisements each time. This last clip showed how quickly a message could be conveyed if you use the right media. I found it hard to condense this clip to exactly 30secs, but i did it.

RemixTWO

For my second Remix, I decided to use the other advertisement I chose, "Folgers Coffee." With this one I took a different approach. I decided to make it sound like you shouldn't by the coffee, by using what the husband says at the start about the coffee being "awful coffee" before she uses "Folgers." This clip is less repetitive but still has its' own little personality.

RemixONE

For my first REMIX, I used the advertisement "Bounty Towels." I rearranged the words to create a new look on the advertisement. I added a humourous repetitive streak and remixed the whole concept which kind of makes it look almost like there is nothing else to buy. I really found this first one alot of fun to make.

Change of Idea

I slightly changed my idea - I gathered 14 clips, but picked my two favourite advertisements which are "Bounty Towels" and "Folgers Coffee." The angle I changed to was to create something humourous - with no real message - just showing how the clip is repetitive and unrealistic; sort of pulling out the flaws and the extreme views of the promoters. I will use some material from my other 12 clips I gathered but majority of the clip will be this one advertisement.

My new set of quotes from the two advertisements I wanted to focus on - and then some brainstorming of sentences etc.

Collecting and Arranging Clips

So I watched HEAPS of old advertisements on archive.org and grabbed all "Public Domain" clips. I collected 14 clips and then sifted through them to grab the material I thought would be useful. These clips were from the most adventurous beer to the freshest cigarettes. I complied a bunch of quotes and cut the clips in Quicktime to put into Avid Media Composer. This took about two session to organise and a couple of workbook pages. (see images below)
Of the quotes from all 14 clips and some images, I may like to use.
Estimated timeline with quotes to make sentences and show a wide range of different ideas.

Intial Idea

For this first project I wanted to choose something fun, and not convey a serious message like most of my peers. I wanted to remix something that could be humorous to the viewer. So I chose to use advertisements as my material to remix into something new. I looked on archive.org and found many olden day advertisements from the 1960s etc. So I coined a statement to try and base my clips on "Commercials that complete your life." I wanted to show the way commercials were back then and how it was so influencial, if you didn't have what they were selling it was taboo.

Remix and Remixability

The article "Remix and Remixability" has some very clear points about remixing and diversifying the world we live in.

It's the idea of individuality - the way we blend, use, change and copy can alter anything from culture to a music track. We break things down to simple forms and then build them back up in our way - making a mark on something and adding your own personal touch on the world. for example, Manovich describes how DVDs nowadays can be cut down into chapters, whereas with videos it was one stream of tape.

It almost sounds like our world is changing to suit this need to remix. We are slowly adapting to make everything we use and interact with something we can change. Something that can be improved by somebody else. It's the idea of no boundaries - Manovich describes that you used to be able to tell who did the remixing - i.e whether it was a professional or not - now amateur and pro mixing is almost inseparable the software for remixing is becoming mainstream and it's like a snowball - no one can stop it.
